This week has been great as usual with a lot of assignment tasks and paperwork, sense the sarcasm....just kidding. I rather take responsibility now and learn how to solve it than doing it during my working days. Now let me tell you what's my second task is THE MISAPPLICATION OF GROUP DISCUSSION.
What is group discussion @ GD in short form? Group discussion means a group of people sitting in a round or straight table discussing, sharing, debating or agreeing about a topic. With group discussion, every individual will have the confidence to voice out their ideas and opinion. However, they are some misapplication in group discussion that can be avoided for better discussion.

Firstly, time-consuming. In a group discussion, it involves many individuals. Getting them organized, planning and coordinating their meetings, explaining to them the purpose of having this discussion and goals and finally reaching a solution can be quite a time. It needs a lot of hard work in doing all the planning and organizing. Also, during discussion hour, all information has to be told and finalized within the timeline. Time is wasted if they are unnecessary to talk among members.
Besides, common misapplication in a group discussion is individual domination. Quite often, discussions in a group are dominated by a few members. Although group discussion is a collective discussion among everyone in the meeting some people usually manage to avoid because of their personality and style of participation. If their behavior is that, thereby there is no use of having a group discussion.
Furthermore, normally at the end of a discussion, there will be a majority vote for a topic. Reaching an agreement can be difficult. In a group discussion, they will be disagreement and agreement in a meeting, that's how it's supposed to be because everyone has their own opinion and ideas regarding the topic. To actually have everyone's reasons and ideas at the end of the meeting is time-consuming so the leader has to give chance to others to speak out their view and ideas before making the final decision.
In conclusion, there are good and bad in group discussion, to overcome the bad impact, everyone in the group has to work together as a team, being punctual, giving attention and help each other in solving problems. These will enhance teamwork in every individual.
Thank You.

Hi, Sangeetha! =D
ReplyDeleteI really like to read your post because it is easy for me to understand. =) So, do you have any suggestions on how to prevent the students from wasting their time with unnecessary talk during group discussion?
Hi Irma,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your feedback. To answer your question, I would suggest to do ground rules for group decision. Ground rules are no interrupting others and make sure everyone has a chance to voice their opinion. For instance, if someone is constantly interrupting others, it is helpful to go back to the ground rules that were presented at the beginning of the discussion. If they break the rules then you can remind them that the group agreed that these were the rules of the group discussion. I hope i answer your question.
Thank You
It's a good idea!👍 I will teach to my students this rules if I were to be an English teacher.😁 Thank you for your suggestion, Sangeetha.
